Buangkok was a quiet, mostly residential stop for its first two decades, but that changed in March 2023 with the opening of Sengkang Grand Mall, a three-level retail, hawker centre and community club complex built directly above the station, alongside a new bus interchange and 680 homes at Sengkang Grand Residences. Despite the name, the whole development sits squarely on top of Buangkok, not the Sengkang station further north, which occasionally confuses first-time visitors checking a map. The Institute of Mental Health, Singapore's principal psychiatric hospital, also lies within the same neighbourhood, a short bus ride rather than a walk from the station.
