Hougang station sits at the heart of Hougang Central, one of the older new towns in the north-east, directly connected to Hougang Mall and the Hougang Central Bus Interchange. The station's circular-roofed entrance has become a small local landmark in its own right, recognisable from some way down the street. A second mall, Hougang 1, lies further west in Hougang Avenue 3 and is better reached by bus than on foot. The neighbourhood is largely residential, with the Hougang Sports Hall and polyclinic nearby serving the surrounding housing estate rather than visitors passing through on a day trip.
