Tongkang takes its name from the small cargo boats once used to move goods along Singapore's rivers, a nod to the area's past before the new town replaced it. It's a residential stop serving HDB blocks in the Fernvale area, seven stops out from Sengkang on the West Loop and correspondingly close to the end of the line — only Renjong stands between here and the return to the interchange. As with the rest of the West Loop away from Fernvale and Thanggam, there's nothing beyond a coffee shop and the usual neighbourhood shops at street level.
