Cantonment MRT station

Cantonment station in detail

Cantonment opened on 12 July 2026, built directly beneath the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, which served as the Singapore terminus of the Malayan Railway until services moved to Woodlands in 2011. The old station building, gazetted as a national monument, stands preserved above the new MRT station, and the platform and concourse below were designed to echo it — a three-storey-high platform under a curved ceiling, with stained-glass murals based on motifs from the original building. Above ground, Cantonment serves the historic Tanjong Pagar conservation area, one of Singapore's best-preserved clusters of pre-war shophouses, with the restaurants and bars of Duxton Hill a short walk further north. It is one of the more design-conscious stations to open on the network in years, built around heritage rather than around it.

Facilities at Cantonment
Cantonment is worth lingering in for a few minutes rather than heading straight for the exit — the platform's curved ceiling and stained-glass murals, designed to echo the old railway station above, are some of the most distinctive station architecture the Circle Line has added in years.
