Tanah Merah is where the East West Line divides: through trains continue west towards the city, while a two-station shuttle branches off to Expo and Changi Airport. Anyone travelling to the airport from town changes here to the shuttle; since the station was reconfigured in December 2025, follow the signs and the platform displays to the Changi Airport platform. The station itself is fairly residential, with little around it beyond housing and a small commercial strip, so most passengers are either commuters from the surrounding estate or travellers in transit rather than people stopping to visit the area.
