Ang Mo Kio is one of the bigger interchanges-in-spirit-if-not-in-lines on the North South Line, home to AMK Hub, a large mall directly linked to the station with a supermarket, cinema, library and polyclinic all under one roof. The bus interchange beside it is one of the busiest in the north-east, and the town itself is one of Singapore's oldest new towns, developed from the 1970s onward, which shows in its wide boulevards and mature trees. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West, with its lookout tower and ponds, is a pleasant walk from the station, and the older Broadway Plaza across the road remains a low-key alternative for food away from the main mall crowds.
