Tan Kah Kee station in detail

Tan Kah Kee is named after the philanthropist and businessman whose fortune helped found Xiamen University and several schools in Singapore, chosen by public vote in 2009 — the first time an MRT station took a person's full name instead of a place name. Fittingly, the station sits directly beneath the campus of Hwa Chong Institution, the school Tan Kah Kee helped establish, and it also serves National Junior College and Nanyang Girls' High School, both within a few minutes' walk. Outside term time and rush hour the area is quiet, residential Bukit Timah; during the school day and at dismissal, this is one of the busiest stretches of the Downtown Line for foot traffic, even though it has no malls of its own.

Tan Kah Kee — frequently asked questions
It was named through a public vote in 2009 after Tan Kah Kee, a philanthropist and businessman who helped found Xiamen University and several Singapore schools, including Hwa Chong Institution, which sits directly above the station.
Hwa Chong Institution is built right above the station, with National Junior College and Nanyang Girls’ High School both a short walk away — together they make this one of the busiest stops on the line during school hours.
Not really a sightseeing destination in itself; it’s a residential and school area with no malls of its own. It’s mainly useful as a quick, direct link if you’re visiting one of the schools nearby.
