Telok Ayer MRT station

Telok Ayer station in detail

Telok Ayer opens onto one of the best-preserved pockets of old Chinatown, a knot of narrow streets — Amoy Street, Ann Siang Hill, Club Street — lined with converted shophouses that now hold bars, restaurants and boutique offices rather than the trading houses they were built for. Thian Hock Keng, Singapore's oldest Hokkien temple, dedicated to the sea goddess Ma Zu Po and founded in 1839, is a five-minute walk from the exits, along with the Amoy Street hawker centre for cheaper, faster food. By day the area fills with office workers from the surrounding CBD towers; by evening the same streets turn into one of the city's more atmospheric spots for after-work drinks, spilling out of restored shophouse fronts.
